48 Shades of Brown

I lock the doors. I check the windows. I rewind the video. I check the doors.
I lie on my bed, listening for noises, but there's only the traffic on Moggill Road.
I tell myself I am alone in an adult, only-occupant-of-the-house kind of way, and that's okay. I tell myself to focus on the positives. Everything will be fine. And if I end up getting about one percent of the luck Chris Burns is sure is coming my way, this will be a good year. Better than good. (p. 71)

And my girlfriend, the one who's so relaxed and at ease here, has managed to stay so relaxed that she hasn't found me yet. It's not as though I've given her much opportunity. Not as though I can realistically expect her to turn up at the door of my maths class and whisk me off to some special two-minute bouncy place. Perhaps she should try to meet me on the train. An afternoon would be preferable. Her best chance would be the nine-minute ride between Roma Street and home, so she'll have to be a fast worker. (p. 75)
