48 Shades of Brown

On Sunday we go out to the uni lakes for lunch. It's Jacq's idea.
She also suggests picking food up from the deli where Naomi works, and using her staff discount, but Naomi says, I wouldn't eat food from there. We think there's a rat living in the kitchen. (p. 109-10)

There's not much said during lunch. It's hot, even in the deep shade under the tree. Naomi isn't exactly buoyant, so her silences are different today. She's not quite the person who sits at the blue table, saying whatever she wants to, whenever she wants to, and drifting away and saying nothing when she wants to do that. There's a greater density to the silences. That's how it feels, at least.
The humidity sits thickly around the banks of the lakes and the ducks find shade and tuck their heads into themselves to sleep.
Uni tomorrow, Naomi says, looking across to the buildings on the other side of the water. (p. 112)
