A week or so after she died I was in a pretty bizarre state. She was gone, the Bean was home. I was totally sleep-deprived. I dropped in to work - I don't know why - and I was walking around Toowong Village and I found myself in the bookshop, standing there with the biggest dictionary they had, looking up 'lardoon'. Which is the fatty cut of bacon used to lard other meats. So I was entirely justified in not ordering it. (p. 298)
